Alexandre le Grand a un statut tout à fait unique au regard de l’histoire. Pour les Grecs et les Romains Il est un héros, pour les Arabes un prophète, pour les occidentaux un mythe. A lui seul, il a hellénisé le monde antique jusqu’aux confins de l’Inde en poursuivant sans relâche son ennemi juré Darius, le grand roi des Perses.
Ce film évoque d’une manière nouvelle l’univers d’Alexandre Le grand, à travers les traces matérielles et artistiques de la civilisation macédonienne antique. Il met en rapport le mythe parvenu jusqu'à nous et l’histoire. L’interprétation par Jonathan Hostier d’extraits de « Le tigre bleu de l’Euphrate » de Laurent Gaudé scande le film. Alexander the Great has always had a unique status in terms of history. To the Greeks and Romans, he was a hero, to the Arabs, he was a prophet, to Westerners, he is a myth. He spread Greek civilisation single-handedly throughout the ancient world, as far as the borders of India, by relentlessly pursuing his sworn enemy Darius, King of Persia.

This film takes a fresh look at the universe of Alexander the Great, via material and artistic remains of ancient Macedonian civilisation. It links history to the myth that has come down to us. The film is punctuated by extracts from Laurent Gaudé’s “The Blue Tiger of the Euphrates”, in which Alexander the Great looks back over his life, in the face of death. But who really was Alexander the Great?
Bernard George relates the king’s origins, his training, his culture and the spirit in which he carried out his conquest. Footage of major collections and of protected sites in Northern Greece lends great beauty to the journey.
Archaeologists and scientists provide an up-to-date account of the current state of research and take a detailed look at the impact the young Macedonian king has had on the world.
