Vers 1800, Paris étouffe dans ses structures héritées du Moyen Âge. Pourtant, en quelques décennies, la ville devient la capitale du XIXe siècle. Ce documentaire, réalisé d’après les travaux de l’historien d’art François Loyer, est une analyse fine de cette transformation qui a fait de Paris une ville moderne. Le film cherche sans cesse à comprendre la trame du tissu urbain dans lequel vivent les Parisiens d’aujourd’hui. Et au cours de cette traversée, on découvre un Paris différent de l’image que l’on se fait habituellement de la ville haussmannienne : une cité conçue comme un gigantesque décor, avec ses effets de trompe-l’œil et de perspectives et qui, malgré sa croissance vertigineuse, a su garder sa cohérence.

In the early 1800s, Paris was visibly stifled by the structures it had inherited from the Middle Ages. Yet within a few decades, the city managed to become the capital of the 19th century. This documentary, based on the work of art historian François Loyer, provides a detailed analysis of the transformation of Paris into a modern city. The film constantly seeks to understand how the urban fabric that is the home of Parisians today was woven together. Through the film we discover a Paris that is different from the image generally presented of the City of Light – a city designed as a giant backdrop which plays with optical illusions and different perspectives, but which - despite breathtaking growth - has managed to retain a logical structure.
