Le Musée du Louvre a confié aux architectes Rudy Ricciotti et Mario Bellini,  la construction d’un nouveau bâtiment audacieux pour abriter le département des Arts de l’Islam. Une architecture comme « une main tendue »  entre les arts de l’occident et ceux de l’Islam. S’y côtoient des collections d’objets et des décors d’architecture qui témoignent de la diversité des civilisations Islamiques.

The Outstretched hand - A movie by Richard Copans – 49’
The Louvre Museum asked architects Rudy Ricciotti and Mario Bellini to design an audacious building in the Cour Visconti, to house the Department of Islamic Arts.  The result, which is like “an outstretched hand” between the arts of the West and those of Islam, was opened in 2012. Both the architectural setting and the collections of objects bear witness to the diversity of Islamic civilisations.

LES LUMIERES DE L'ISLAM - Un film de Patrick Ladoucette – 52'
En 2006 débute, dans la cour Visconti, la construction du nouveau département des Arts de l’Islam, futur écrin d’une des plus belles collections du monde, réunissant celles du musée du Louvre et des Arts Décoratifs. Remontant le temps et guidé par Sophie Makariou, la directrice du département et conservateur spécialiste de l’Islam, le spectateur est plongé au cœur des problématiques soulevées par une telle entreprise. Il est aux côtés de l’équipe, dans l’intimité de leurs interrogations, de leurs doutes et de leurs difficultés à gérer un projet unique au monde.

2006 saw the beginnings of the construction, in the Cour Visconti, of the new Department of Islamic Art - the future backdrop for one of the world’s most beautiful collections, which brings together those of the Louvre Museum and those of the Museum of Decorative Arts. Travelling back in time, with as their guide, curator Sophie Makariou, Director of the department and an expert on Islam, viewers are plunged into the heart of the various issues thrown up by the project. Viewers follow the team, and are privy to its members’ questionings, doubts and difficulties in managing this unique enterprise.
